Lake plan would protect 40 miles Fri, 01 Aug 2008 00:34 EDT SCE&G wants to put 40 more miles of Lake Murray shoreline off-limits to development, 10 of which would be set aside for new recreation areas. Most of the 112 tracts that would be preserved are in the rural, western half of the lake, in Newberry and Saluda counties. The once-in-a-generation proposal outlined Thursday still would allow development of 51 miles of shoreline, much of it in the same area.Preservationists and developers have long awaited the proposal by South Carolina Electric & Gas about how the 47,500-acre lake would continue to grow.Federal officials have pressed for more public access and less growth, to improve water quality. They must approve SCE&G’s decision as part of the utility’s relicensing application.
Changing USC leadership: Final hours, final thoughts Fri, 01 Aug 2008 06:20 EDT It’s just after 8 o’clock on an already warm Thursday morning, and in walks Andrew Sorensen, dressed for work, his multicolored bow tie setting off a straw-colored blazer. The walls of his once elegantly appointed office in the Osborne Administration Building are bare. A few plants are in the room, but it’s mostly just space.Sorensen, 70, is still flushed from his morning bike ride. Six years as president of USC, and his tenure is now down to a few hours. It’s to be a half-day of work, and then it’s on to a vacation with his wife, children and grandchild in upstate New York. When he comes back a week from Monday, he will begin his new work life as a special-projects collaborator in USC’s School of Medicine. A new man, a pro of sorts, will be settling into his old chair.USC’s spokesman, Russ McKinney, pulls Sorensen aside to tell him that a fire has destroyed an apartment complex next to the campus at USC Upstate. No one’s been killed; some of the USC students who lived there were injured, though none is believed to be seriously hurt.

After a unanimous vote to accept the resignation, board chairwoman Paula Hite said the decision was mutual.“The board and Dr. Andersen have mutually agreed to part ways,” she said in a prepared statement. “On behalf of the board, I would like to thank the community for their patience and support as this matter was resolved.” |
A ‘monster,’ gently grown Thu, 31 Jul 2008 23:06 EDT When it’s hoisted on the scales at the State Farmers Market today, Frank and Tina Finders are hoping their pampered pumpkin will top a half-ton — and set a record for South Carolina. The newlyweds have been waiting for this day for nearly four months, keeping their pumpkin moist and shady. Two plastic hoot-owls scared curious crows from their garden in Arcadia Lakes.“You ever seen something that big?” Tina Finders said, grinning. At the height of the growing season, the Finders’ pumpkin was putting on 60 pounds a night. It was practically growing before their eyes.
District 5 bonds hang in balance Thu, 31 Jul 2008 23:34 EDT Peggy Rast is one Irmo parent who is ready to move beyond the resignation of school superintendent Scott Andersen and get down to what she considers important school business: passage of a $243.7 million bond proposal in a November referendum.Rast said she sat on the sidelines in 2007, when opponents waged a successful campaign to defeat a proposed $256.5 million bond issue. This year will be different, she vowed Thursday.“We’ve got to press the case,” said Rast, a mother of five with three children still in district schools. “I think the opposition has been given too much credence and we haven’t been able to eliminate doubt.”But bond opponent Wayne Duncan has doubts about growth projections Andersen presented and said he believes the superintendent’s departure will affect the outcome of the ballot question.

Pastides plans his first moves Thu, 31 Jul 2008 23:35 EDT Harris Pastides will look to get off to a busy start as USC’s new president today, when he is expected to announce that he wants to draft a sweeping strategic plan for the university and mount national searches for two top-level administrators.Pastides’ first move today will be symbolic — a walk from the president’s house on the Horseshoe to the Osborne Administration Building, where the university president’s office is located. That office now belongs to Pastides, selected by USC’s Board of Trustees to succeed Andrew Sorensen, who had been the school’s president since 2002.Pastides, 54, said Thursday that he knows being an internal candidate — he was dean of the Arnold School of Public Health and then vice president for research and health sciences before being named president — means people will not expect him to miss a beat as he moves into the top job.“The expectation is that I’d know where some of the opportunities are,” Pastides said.

Budget woes plague states Thu, 31 Jul 2008 23:54 EDT SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is laying off as many as 22,000 state employees. New York’s governor is raising the possibility of selling — or more accurately, leasing — the Brooklyn Bridge. Nevada is burning through its rainy-day fund like a gambler on a losing streak. And Maryland is pinning its hopes on slot machines. With the economy in a slide and the housing market in crisis, states are collectively rolling up tens of billions of dollars in budget deficits in one of the worst financial crunches in the U.S. since the 1970s.The startlingly rapid drop-off in tax revenue is forcing many states to make some hard decisions: Raise taxes? Cut programs and jobs? Dip into reserves? Borrow money? Lease or sell state assets?“They’re all terrible choices,” Nevada Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley said of the cuts her state made in a special session last month. “I believe we should never have to make these kinds of choices ever again.”Economists say the red ink is only going to get deeper later in the fiscal year when tax returns start coming in.

Outlook for quick recovery dims Thu, 31 Jul 2008 23:18 EDT The economy grew less than expected from April to June, the government said on Thursday, and it shrank in the final months of 2007, dimming the outlook for a quick recovery.Gross domestic product expanded at an annual rate of 1.9 percent in the second quarter, the Commerce Department reported, primarily because of a surge in export sales powered by the weak dollar. The government’s tax stimulus package pushed consumer spending higher, but the ongoing pain in the housing market took a sharp toll on overall growth. But that figure was below the estimate of many economists, who had expected growth of 2.3 percent, and it cast doubt on whether the stimulus package would be able to prop up the economy in the months ahead.“It will be a slog for the economy for the next six to 12 months. The recession may be over, but it won’t feel good until this time next year,” said Mark Zandi, the chief economist of Moody’s Economy.com.Expansion in the second quarter outpaced the first months of the year, when the economy grew at a 0.9 percent annual pace. That figure was revised down from the government’s first estimate of 1 percent.
