Charlotte landlord gunned down during eviction Thu, 31 Jul 2008 06:53 EDT Neighbors who watched as their landlord was shot to death expressed disbelief Wednesday about an eviction that ended in homicide in their Grier Heights neighborhood.Jacob Massachi died Tuesday after trying to evict Shawn Howard and his pregnant girlfriend from a brick house off Monroe Road, police and neighbors said. The shooting ended weeks of turmoil between the men as neighbors looked on from their porches in the late afternoon sun.Massachi, known to residents as Mr. Jacob, the rent man, had told the couple they had to move out and Tuesday was their last day. He'd left a note on their door weeks earlier because they hadn't paid all of their rent, neighbors said.About 4 p.m. Massachi and an employee began hauling furniture, clothes and other belongings from Howard's home in the 3000 block of Zircon Street, they said.Howard, 26, who was home at the time, left briefly and was seen talking with a friend down the street. He reappeared about 4:45 p.m. with a jacket draped over his forearm, neighbors said.
Deputy retires after ID flap Thu, 31 Jul 2008 06:49 EDT BLUFFTON -- A Beaufort County sheriff's deputy who came under fire last week for unnecessarily requiring people to produce in-state driver's licenses when they paid vehicle taxes has retired, Sheriff P.J. Tanner said Wednesday. Sgt. Neal Player, hired by the Sheriff's Office in 1983, retired Monday from his job as one of two deputies assigned as liaisons to the county auditor's office to enforce local tax laws. But for at least 10 months, Player created an obstacle for people paying car property taxes, primarily at the auditor's Bluffton office, officials said. Neither state nor county law requires a valid South Carolina driver's license to pay vehicle taxes. Those without in-state licenses were not allowed to pay taxes and, in some cases, were escorted from the building by Player when they complained. The policy disproportionately affected Hispanic residents because they are less likely to have in-state licenses, Hispanic advocates said last week.An attorney objected to the license "requirement" in October, but the practice continued until mid-July and spread to the auditor's office on Hilton Head Island until Tanner and auditor Sharon Burris ended it.
Hanging with the Jonas Bros. in Charlotte Wed, 30 Jul 2008 07:29 EDT I was the envy of all tweenage girls Tuesday when I had the chance to meet and spend the day with the Jonas Brothers, the Disney-cultivated it pop group of the moment. The boys, Nick, Joe and Kevin ages 15, 18 and 20, respectively go nonstop from city to city, promoting their tour, upcoming album, charity and latest acting gigs. But in their downtime, they manage to make room to be normal kids.8 a.m.: The brothers arrive in Charlotte after playing Cincinnati the night before.Noon: News conference with select group of media at the Westin Charlotte. Among the highlights: Joe jokes that the biggest thing he looks forward to when visiting family in North Carolina (his father's side of the family is from Gaston County) is Cracker Barrel. His brothers chime in, We love having family around. Family is No.1 for us.
Sewage fouls Saluda river Wed, 30 Jul 2008 22:04 EDT A sewage spill is contaminating the rapids on the lower Saluda River, one of the area’s most popular spots to wade and swim.State health officials Wednesday warned people to stay out of a five-mile stretch of the river until the pollution is dispersed, but they can’t say how soon that will happen.Partially treated sewage from Alpine Utilities’ plant 1½ miles upstream flowed into the river for a week, said Adam Myrick, spokesman for the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.A variety of bacteria is in the river at “exceedingly high” levels, he said.Swallowing water or getting it into cuts could lead to illness, officials said.
No mourners, but ‘a proper burial’: Elegy for the ‘unclaimed’ Wed, 30 Jul 2008 22:29 EDT In a small cemetery surrounded by a low chain-link fence, mounds of red dirt sat in front of 15 freshly dug graves Wednesday.Bronze-colored markers bore the names of the men, women and child whose cremated remains were placed there. The only thing left to do was say a few words to send them on.The Rev. Tim Phillips began the ceremony by reading Psalms 23 and then said a prayer.“God is the one who can meet all of our needs. It is he who walks with us.”
Donors’ gifts to USC set a record Wed, 30 Jul 2008 22:04 EDT The University of South Carolina raised $106.2 million from private donors last year, smashing a school fundraising record that had stood for a decade.“In a year of economic challenges nationally and declining state and federal support for higher education, our alumni, parents, friends and faculty and staff have stepped up giving because they see the University of South Carolina as one of the greatest investments they can make in the future of our young people and our state,” outgoing USC president Andrew Sorensen said in a news release Wednesday.Nearly 46,000 donors, more than had ever given before, contributed to USC’s haul. And there was a spike in the number of gifts of $1 million or more. The university received 18 such gifts in 2007-08, compared with eight the previous year.Such enthusiastic giving is a good sign for USC’s upcoming capital campaign. Trustees are considering setting a $500 million goal for that fundraising effort.“Those who gave realize the university’s growing stature and continued promise for a knowledge economy that depends on research, collaboration and innovation,” said Michelle Dodenhoff, USC’s associate vice president for development.
‘Interim’ funding will run buses Wed, 30 Jul 2008 22:04 EDT A broad approach to addressing Richland County’s transportation needs might be shrinking to a core issue: How to keep the buses rolling. With the bus system’s financial crisis coming to a head within the year, Columbia City Council pledged Wednesday to assist with “interim” funding in hopes the county will reconsider a sales-tax referendum for 2010.For some, that holds appeal.“In two years’ time, we’ll be in a better position to make a judgment,” said Richland Councilwoman Val Hutchinson, who cited the dismal economy as the main reason the county ditched a proposed sales-tax referendum last week.Others aren’t so sure.

For favored few: Life on the V list Wed, 30 Jul 2008 22:04 EDT WASHINGTON — As speculation swirls, Barack Obama and John McCain are knuckling down to the work of choosing running mates with their nominating conventions just weeks away.Current and former governors and senators seem to be the most serious contenders, though most of those mentioned are playing coy about discussions they might be having with either campaign.“I’m just not going to talk about my conversations with the campaign,” Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia said Tuesday, declining to confirm media reports he has provided financial documents to Obama for review.A potential Republican running mate, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, said he has decided to stop answering questions about a spot on McCain’s ticket because of the gossip.Among others believed to be getting close looks:
No wrongdoing found in handling of DUI tickets Wed, 30 Jul 2008 22:04 EDT ORANGEBURG — No charges will be filed against a trooper for his handling of 10 DUI tickets, prosecutor David Pascoe said.A State Law Enforcement Division investigation found that nine of the tickets for driving under the influence were pleaded down to reckless driving, while the 10th was dismissed, Pascoe told The (Orangeburg) Times and Democrat. The handling of the tickets issued by trooper David Smith came under extra scrutiny because the defense lawyer in eight of the cases was state Sen. Brad Hutto. The Orangeburg Democrat has said the cases were dealt with properly. The cases were more than three years old, on average, and charges were not dismissed in any of the eight cases involving Hutto, Pascoe said.“It was a red flag, but once you investigate it, most of these were just (pleaded) down,” Pascoe said. “It was nothing out of the ordinary.”

Politics, policy keep SC bridges deficient Wed, 30 Jul 2008 22:34 EDT South Carolina has one of the worst records in the nation in addressing structurally deficient bridges, an analysis by The Associated Press shows. Each day, more than 900,000 cars travel over the state’s 20 busiest and structurally deficient bridges, but efforts to put more money into bringing those bridges up to engineering standards are mired in politics. In the year since a deadly interstate bridge collapse in Minneapolis, just one of those S.C. spans has been fixed, although the state transportation chief says none of South Carolina’s bridges is unsafe or likely to collapse. That single span is S.C. 171 over James Island Creek.Improvements are planned for two other spans: the U.S. 76 bypass at U.S. 521 in Sumter and U.S. 21 over Albergotti Creek near Beaufort. But there are no plans for 17 other structures, including four on I-26 near Columbia that carry carry 325,000 cars daily.
Children’s hospital is recovering Thu, 31 Jul 2008 00:16 EDT The 55 children transferred Tuesday to Palmetto Health Richland hospital from the new Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital should return to their rooms today.Hospital officials hoped to have power returned to the children’s hospital this morning after a pressurized, 24-inch water pipe burst behind the building and flooded an electrical room. Both hospitals, which are adjacent to each other and share a common corridor, lost air conditioning when the pipe carrying refrigerated water burst. The children’s hospital also lost power when the water flooded a 3-foot-wide, 30-foot-deep manhole in the back of the building and leaked into an underground electrical room, said Gary Hogue, the hospital’s director of engineering services.Temperatures rose to as high as the high 90s in some areas of the hospital. But hospital workers brought fans and portable air conditioners into some areas to keep temperatures tolerable.

Let’s get together Wed, 30 Jul 2008 21:05 EDT A lot has changed since Tina Jackson’s family moved to Carriage Hill Lakes five years ago.Her family has become one of the veterans as new families moved in, and out, of the Lexington County neighborhood. While Jackson knows her neighborhood’s situation isn’t unique — some suburban subdivisions that attract young families in places like northeast and northwest Richland see the same movement — it does make her think about how busier lives are changing the way we live.“The whole neighborhood concept isn’t what it used to be,” she said.Knowing who your neighbors are is more important than ever, not only as a social outlet but as a way of keeping families and neighborhoods safe from crime.
